During your bi-annual check ups, our dentist, Dr. Kelly Jordan will examine your teeth and gums for any problems that may need to be treated. Your check-up will consist of a teeth cleaning by a trusted dental hygienist and a thorough exam by the dentist.
With specialized training and instruments, our Vancouver dental hygienist will clean your teeth to eliminate plaque and tartar, leaving your teeth so smooth that germs cannot stick to them.
During your dental cleaning appointment, an ultrasonic instrument knocks larger pieces of tartar loose with tickling vibrations and a cooling mist of water is applied to rinse away the debris. The hygienist will utilize “scalers” and “curettes” to carefully scrape small tartar deposits off your teeth. These devices are curved, pointed and sharp. However, when used properly they will not hurt in the slightest.
Our gentle Vancouver dental hygiene team prides themselves in the extreme level of comfort they provide during their cleaning procedures. Not only will they take immaculate care of your teeth while using the scalers and curettes, but they will happily keep conversation with you to help ease your mind during the process.
Additionally, basic flossing will take place. During this step, blood may appear in between the teeth that you neglect when brushing. This step will not hurt at all, and the blood is actually an effective way of discovering compromised areas that require more daily attention. Thus, lowering the chance of greater issues in the future.
Next, a rotating handpiece with a soft rubber cup will spins rapidly to polish your teeth. The hygienist will load the cup with a polishing and cleaning tooth paste and then run the device over the fronts and backs of all your teeth to make them shiny and smooth. There are a variety of paste flavors available for all patients including children.
At Absolute Dental, Dr. Kelly Jordan recommends getting your teeth cleaned professionally twice a year, in addition to your regular brushing and flossing. However, if you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, the recommendation is to have a professional cleaning 3-4 times per year. Consistently maintaining a healthy mouth is key to preserving a healthy body.
If you have not had your teeth cleaned in the past 6 months, call Absolute Dental today! Most dental insurance coverage plans cover 2-4 teeth cleanings each year. If you are putting off a dental check-up because of financial reasons, we recommend speaking with one of our staff members to figure out a strategic payment plan that won’t jeopardize your dental health.
